Background information on Greg:

How could I have known in 1973 that my first taste of a full time job with Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company would result in a 30+ year career and allow me to be a witness to the overwhelming changes in the telecommunications industry?

My first experience was as a directory assistance operator. In 1973 I was the only man in an all woman office of operators and supervisors. Quite an experience for a newly engaged young man of 20! Luckily, I was only there for a year before my supervisor found me a transfer to the engineering department as a drafter in the just established 'Underground District' of Los Angeles, California. The next 32 years would expose me to stints as a Building Inspector, Construction Supervisor, Drafting Supervisor, Right of Way Agent, Public Works Coordinator and Conduit Layout Design Engineer. I worked with headquarters staff to investigate and eventually implement the computerization of the drawing & engineering process using AutoCAD and wrote the manual that is in use today to train new Conduit Layout Engineers.

I retired in mid-2005 with 32 years service and moved to the Pacific Northwest where I am today. I continue to sub-contract back to AT&T in California for design of new housing tracts and street improvement projects. I now specialize in projects that do not require fielding the actual job site. Typically, I am sent AutoCAD 'base-maps' of a new project and I overlay the proposed telecommunications structure onto those drawings and return permit ready drawings back to the originator.
